In Two Worlds is the vivid photographic protrait of a Yap'ik Eskimo family and through them, of a vital community that continuously adopts modern ways without abandoning tradition values.
Alice and Billy Ribes and their children live in the small Alskan community of Scammon Bay, on the coast of the Bering Sea. Ther are no roads into the village, no human habitation within a day's walk; the three hundred and fifity people who live there keep in touch with the outside world by telephone, satellite dish, and plane. The Rives children use computers at school, and after school play the same video games as kids from around the world. But Sarah also helps her mother mix the traditional akutag, and when Jacob, at age nine, shot his first seal, he shared it with the village elders as Yip'ik boys have done for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years.
This book provides a lively account of one family's life in a charging world. Words and photographs combine to create a picture of an appealing fmaily as they draw strenght from their ancient heritage and dal with the modern world.
