Planet Earth is not simply a solid ball of rock. Of the Earth's four layers, only the inner core is solid. The outer core is so hot that it is liquid. The mantle is mostly solid rock mixed with rocks that have melted to form a thick liquid called magma. The crust is solid rock, but made up of slabs, or plates, with cracks or faults between them. Many of the Earth's dramatic landforms, from mountains to deep rift valleys, were created by movements beneath the Earth's crust.
